Guest andym Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I'm new to the site and so this may have been discussed before?I have a 99T Galaxy TDI and when (not every time) I turn the engine off I get a whiring noise which comes from behind the dash area on the passenger side.It winds down to nothing after several seconds. I have had the bonnet up and it appears that the noise may be in the area of the fuel pump?On two occasions in the last 6 months the whiring noise has started whilst driving and I felt that I lost acceleration power. All other times the car drives great with no noise apart from as described above. Also my air con has packed in but this has happened after the whiring noise started.Any ideas - solutions? Thanks Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 There is an elctrical water pump that functions for a few minutes after the engine has been switched off, to make sure that the turbo doesn't fry its oil and to eliminate hot-spots in the cooling system. But if the noise only lasts for a few seconds, it suggests something is wrong. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 Andym Had similar problem on my 1999 Tdi and it turned out to be a dry bearing in the heater fan, running on number 1 or 2 which is normally below the hearing level in the car but after switching off for a few seconds the whirring noise was apparent. Cured by switching the heater fan off before the engine. Quote
MrT Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I have a similar whirring noise but it is very faint and I can only hear it in a quiet garage with the engine turned off. I think it is some sort of cooling fan on one of the electrical modules near the pollen filten area. Quote
Andrew T Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 Hmmm...I've noticed that as well, seems to come from the rear nearside the engine. It runs for 15mins or so after the keys are removed, weather or not the engine has been started. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 That is the electric water pump I referred to in my earlier post  Quote
Andrew T Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I think MrT and I are talking about a different noise. This is very faint and could never be be heard over a running engine, or even any background noise. It comes on every time the key has been removed from ignition, even if it has only been in the "ACC" position, it runs for 15 minutes or so and then switches off. Also my engine is petrol, not Turbo Diesel. Any other ideas ? Quote
MrT Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I have just been under my bonnet in the garage and indeed there is a water pump between the engine and the bulkhead that runs for a few minutes after turning off the ignition. It is virtually inaudible from inside the car. Quote
jkspoff Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 The climate control unit has 2 small fans that draw air into the unit, so that it can measure the temperature and adjust accordingly. These make a slight whirring noise only noticeable when engine off and somewhere quiet...... Quote
Guest andym Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Thanks everyone for your advice. I tried the dry bearing bit and switched off the fan before turning the ignition off -Unfortunately I am still getting the occasional whiring noise. I wonder - with the other possabilities mentioned can the Galaxy live with these faults or does it need to go in to avoid it causing major damage??? Quote
